Swedish automaker Volvo is pushing hard for an EV future, betting their existence on a slew of pure electric vehicles like this XC40 Recharge. With the help of a friendlier and more incognito paint color, this friendly-looking SUV may look unassuming at first glance—but it has the power to shake up a parking lot full of gasoline-powered rivals.
The 2023 Volvo xc40 recharge range is available in Core, Plus, and Ultimate trim levels. Our test vehicle, an Ultimate with extra-cost paint and Pixel headlights, rang up at $76,215 including the $1,095 destination charge. That’s more than the 2022 model’s starting price of $55,300 and makes it ineligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit.
Powering the XC40 Recharge is a 78-kWh battery pack that powers twin motors at each axle to provide all-wheel drive and 402 hp and 486 lb-ft of torque. On the EPA Highway rating, the electric SUV can travel 223 miles. That’s a big step up from the previous model, but still short of what we might expect for an electric luxury small SUV.

The XC40 Recharge has the benefit of regenerative braking, which helps it return more energy to the battery. It also features a shift-by-wire single-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. It can be charged at a fast-charging station in 37 minutes and at home with an 11-kilowatt Level 2 charger in seven to eight hours. Volvo’s “one-pedal driving” mode is designed to conserve energy by slowing down the SUV more quickly than a normal driver would at a stoplight.
