EUGENE, Ore. — Psilocybin tea, wind chimes and a tie-dye mattress greet magic mushrooms dispensary Canada customers entering Epic Healing Eugene, America’s first licensed psilocybin service center. The Oregon Health Services Board licenses psilocybin co-ops like this, which are required to offer sessions with “trip sitters” and to help clients navigate the mind-bending effects of the hallucinogen, which users describe as geometric shapes, loss of identity and a sense of oneness with the universe. A session can cost up to $30 for four grams of blue-streaked psilocybin mushroom, and it requires an advance call, an ID (21 and over only) and a statement of intent.
Darren Lyman, owner of FunGuyz, a chain of 17 locations in Canada, tries to make the experience as safe as possible by offering microdosing capsules for those who are new to the drug and by recommending other substances that can enhance the experience (such as St. John’s Wort or a dietary supplement with magnesium, calcium or potassium). He says he also works to ensure that his products are properly sourced and tested.

He adds that he cooks and treats his mushrooms — imported from Lithuania and grown in a greenhouse — to reduce their toxicity, but he says his business hasn’t taken off as quickly as his pot shops have since marijuana was legalized in Florida. He’s working to boost his business by adding a variety of mushroom-infused products, such as edibles and gummies. His company, Chillum, even offers a mycology growth kit that can allow buyers to grow their own magic mushrooms at home.
